MAINSTAY MACRO MINERALS
ABOUT

Magnesium is an essential nutrient for all animals, serving a variety of vital functions within the body for normal appetite, production and reproduction. It is especially crucial for ruminants, in particular lactating dairy cows.  Body stores of magnesium are highly unavailable for daily metabolic processes and in ruminants, magnesium is lost in their milk, urine and digestive secretions.

Magnesium plays an important role in the prevention of milk fever (hypocalceamia – calcium deficiency) and grass tetany, more commonly known as “grass staggers”.

Supplementing is essential and can be done in several ways. Adding magnesium in feed rations and the daily dusting of pasture are the most common practices.

Supplementing magnesium by pasture dusting and through inclusion in water can be labour intensive with high wastage levels and can also lead to reduced pasture and water intakes. Variability of intake per cow and uptake across the herd is a problem dairy farmers face throughout the season.

Palatability

Palatability is a very important consideration in formulating ruminant rations. Not only is magnesium oxide bitter and unpalatable in taste, it’s palatability may vary as a result of particle size.

Alternatively, Bolifor MGP+ is odourless and has a neutral taste and therefore does not have a negative affect on palatability.

Bolifor Mag 33 contains sodium from NaCI. The slightly salty taste effectively masks the bitter taste of magnesium and greatly increases it’s palatability.

Both Bolifor MGP+ and Bolifor Mag 33 can be fed directly to livestock by including in low volume rations and will be well accepted across the herd.

Ease of Use

With a fine particle size, magnesium oxide can be dusty making it irritable to work with in feed production/integration.

Both Bolifor MGP+ and Bolifor Mag 33 are available in a granular form so problems that arise from dustiness are far less likely to occur and animals take to the product freely. By adopting a method utilized in feed lots across the world, MGP+ and Mag 33 may be fed directly to cattle. This removes the need to dust pasture and the uncertainty of dosage and uptake.

In addition to providing a high quality magnesium source to ruminants,
Bolifor MGP+ and Bolifor Mag 33 also provide other essential minerals such as
phosphorus, sulphur, calcium and sodium.

MAGNESIUM

The vital nutrient to help prevent grass staggers and milk fever.

SODIUM

Results from the addition of salt, increasing palatability.

CALCIUM

Is an essential nutrient for skeletal growth, nerve and muscle function.

PHOSPHORUS

OPTIMISER BEEF – MAG
A new Magnesium-rich feed blend is being launched to help beef farmers in the fight against Hypomagnesaemia (Magnesium deficiency) and Milk Fever (Calcium deficiency) – potentially deadly and costly problems.

Difficult to detect and treat due to the extensive nature of beef cattle, Hypomagnesaemia, can be a major culprit of cow death and complications at calving, with losses of up to 20% reported on properties prone to the problem[1]. Often, the first sign of magnesium deficiency is death, meaning loss of capital stock between $1,600-2,400 per cow (based on current prices), loss of calf, plus loss of breeding potential in the herd.

To help solve the problem, animal feed ingredient supplier, BEC Feed Solutions, is partnering with animal feed manufacturer and blender, James & Son (NZ) Pty Ltd. Together, they’ve developed ‘Optimiser MAG – BEEF’ – a new Magnesium-rich concentrated feed blend, featuring the innovative and highly palatable BOLIFOR® MAG33 product – specifically for beef breeding cow operations.

Trina Parker, BEC Country Manager, says awareness is growing about the need for adequate Magnesium in beef breeding cows leading up to calving and for the month post-calving, resulting in increased demand for a convenient, cost efficient mineral supplementation product.

“On the back of our success with the Bolifor® range in dairying, we’ve had numerous requests from beef farmers for a low-risk feed blend incorporating high levels of Magnesium,” explains Ms Parker.

“Our partnership with James & Son means we can deliver these benefits in the form of ‘Optimiser MAG – BEEF’. And, because BOLIFOR® MAG33 is extremely palatable, a concentrated mineral blend such as this will be readily accepted by the herd.”

Optimiser MAG – BEEF comprises a blend of vegetable/grain by products, BOLIFOR® MAG33, sweeteners and additional flavours and is delivered in 500g per day dose rates. Optimiser MAG – BEEF will be available nationwide in 250kg and 500kg bags.

Traditionally, beef breeding operations have not supplemented their stock pre-calving due to no effective means of delivery to the herd. The only real options until now have been Magnesium Oxide, which is often a feed deterrent, or Magnesium salts via water, which is not often achievable at the back of the farm water supply.

Darren Edwards, James & Son’s Commercial Manager, says ease of delivery has been a key consideration for the company in developing Optimiser MAG – BEEF. “Optimiser MAG – BEEF has been designed specifically for delivery to paddock via bulk sling bags. Depending on herd size, cows can be fed directly, or feed can be administered over a few days via a feed trough. Optimiser MAG – BEEF makes dosing beef cattle with Magnesium pre-calving, and in the vital post-calving period, easy and operationally efficient,” says Mr Edwards.

Greg Pillar, James & Son’s Chief Operating Officer, believes a partnership approach with BEC Feed Solutions is proving extremely successful in delivering innovative new products to market. “Working together we hope to replicate the success we’ve enjoyed in helping transform Magnesium use in dairying through the Bolifor® Magnesium range, to deliver a convenient solution for the beef industry,” says Mr Pillar.

Optimiser MAG – BEEF will be available in the North Island from March 2015, and South Island from April 2015.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Bolifor® MGP+

Bolifor® MGP+ is a high quality alternative to magnesium oxide and other sources of magnesium used on New Zealand farms. Magnesium Phosphate is a high quality source of magnesium and phosphorus in granule form.

Bolifor® MGP+ is neutral in taste, therefore cattle won’t be averse to eating it when combined with other feed sources. However BEC Feed Solutions recommend that the daily dose is incorporated with feed i.e., blended with silage, mixed with a meal/blend or similar. This is to facilitate with even uptake across the herd and to ensure each cow receives the required daily dose.

MGP+ is a valuable source of Magnesium and Phosphorus combined in one unique product.
Refer to the nutrient table to see how Bolifor® MGP+ differs from Mag Oxide.

Magnesium (Mg) 24%
Sulphur (S) 2%
Phosphorus (P) 13.5%
Calcium (Ca) 1%

Bolifor® MGP+ is not designed to be dusted on pasture – MGP+ is granular in form and will not settle well on pasture. MGP+ is neutral in taste and is therefore ideal to incorporate into daily feed rations.

Jersey (15g of elemental Mg) 80g

Friesian (20g of elemental Mg) 107g

Amounts are estimates based on Dairy NZ supplementary Magnesium requirements.
Requirements may vary depending on many factors including regimes, herd age, production stage.
Follow the above recommended daily dose rates or as per advice from a nutritionist, veterinarian or suitably qualified professional.
Please call 0800 BEC 001 for any questions regarding dose rates for differing weights or breeds.

The dose rate recommendation is calculated based on the combination of the rumen solubility of MGP+ and its elemental level of Magnesium. This feeding rate will ensure it delivers the required elemental magnesium per cow per day.

Feeding rates are based on the daily requirement of magnesium, please recalculate according to phosphorus requirements as required.

If you deliver the recommended daily rates of Bolifor® MGP+ to your cattle, no further supplementation of magnesium is required. Please consult your veterinarian or nutritionist for further guidance on the nutritional requirements for your herd.

Bolifor® Mag33

Bolifor® Mag33 is a unique, superior quality source of magnesium in granule form, and is coated with sodium chloride. Bolifor® Mag33 is a high quality alternative to Magnesium oxide and other sources of magnesium used on New Zealand farms.

Bolifor Mag33 is manufactured using a combination of superior quality magnesium sources, phosphoric acid and salt. All raw materials used to manufacture Mag33 are only of mineral origin and are carefully selected and continuously monitored for nutrient content, levels of undesirable substances and reactivity.

Bolifor® Mag33 is palatable, therefore cattle will eat it directly. However BEC Feed Solutions recommend that the daily dose is incorporated with feed i.e., blended with silage, mixed with a meal/blend or similar. This is to facilitate with even uptake across the herd and to ensure each cow receives the required daily dose.

During the granulation process, Bolifor® Mag33 is sodium chloride (salt) is added. The slightly salty taste effectively masks the bitter taste of magnesium and greatly increases its palatability.

Refer to the nutrient table to see how Bolifor® Mag33 differs from Mag Oxide.

Magnesium Oxide is dusty and has been developed to dust on pasture primarily. This practice is labour intensive, has high wastage and variable uptake across the herd. Wastage due to rain and wind also add to the variability of uptake.

Bolifor® Mag33 is not designed to be dusted on pasture – Mag33 is granular in form and will not settle well on pasture. Mag33 is highly palatable (as it is coated in salt) and is therefore ideal to incorporate into daily feed rations.

Based on DairyNZ’s recommendations for lactating dairy cattle we recommend the following supplementation rates.

The dose rate recommendation has been calculated based on taking into consideration both the rumen solubility of Mag33 and the elemental magnesium levels in Mag33. The recommended feeding rate will ensure the elemental magnesium requirement (per cow per day) is met.

If you deliver the recommended daily rates of Bolifor® Mag33 to your cattle, no further supplementation of magnesium is required. Please consult your veterinarian or nutritionist for further guidance on the nutritional requirements for your herd.

Mag33 is granulated and free flowing which makes the product less dusty and easy to handle. Mag33 is not irritable.
